Are ceramics food safe?
All my ceramics are glazed with food safe materials, coated with either a satin or glossy finish to protect the pattern and designs.
How do I best look after my ceramics?
To retain the quality of your pieces and ensure longevity, handwashing with a non abrasive cloth or sponge in warm soapy water is recommended. Avoid placing in extreme hot or cold environment such as hot plate cooktop or freezer, as this could cause thermal shock and result in fragility, cracking and/or breakage.
To prevent food staining, rinse your ceramics as soon as possible, foods with high colour concentration such as berries, beetroot, coffee, tea can stain the ceramics if left for too long. It is an issue of chemistry, where the acid from the food can stain the piece especially as the food breaks down.
Are ceramics microwave/oven/diswasher safe?
Handmade ceramics are dishwasher safe, but we do still recommend washing by hand with a soft sponge and as little diswashing liquid as possible.
If you use a dishwasher, use a mild detergent as some brands are quite abrasive and can gradually dull the surface of your ceramics over the years.
My mid fired stoneware ceramics are not for oven use, microwaves can damage them as well. When a ceramic piece is exposed to microwave, liquids that have permeated into the clay become super-heated, expanding then contracting rapidly. Repeated heating will weaken the integrity of the piece over time and make it more susceptible to damage.
