It's getting closer friends!!!
Today I have been unloading my kiln, sanding and packing some beautiful ceramics I have been making the last few weeks.
This weekend I'll be presenting you cups, vases, serving boards, platters , earrings among other pretty things.
I am very happy with my new collection of cups and mugs. They are a work of labor and a collectable piece. They are very tricky to make around this time of the year. They tend to warp a lot if the weather warms up too quickly or crack while drying. In fact I lost a few in my attempt to have some more in stock. I hope they will be all taken to a new home to be loved and treasured.

It has been a while!!!

Hola, I am Jessica a ceramic artist based in North East Victoria, Australia.

I was born and raised in Chile and I came to Australia 18 years ago after finishing uni. I went for a little trip overseas and it turned into a three year adventure which ended up in the land of kangaroos.

I am a mum of two boys and a jack Russell baby girl called Lola, she's my loyal companion in the studio.

My journey in the ceramic world wasn't really a plan but I have been creative my whole life, always drawn to making things, and funny enough a business woman!. I remember making crafts to sell so I could have money to buy Xmas presents for my family.

My mum and dad were makers when I was a child, so I learned a few skills from them at the time, like sewing in an industrial machine at age 10.

I am an early childhood educator as well, I worked in the field for 15 years and I think this has a deep influence in my actual work. I was always super keen at making the learning spaces as attractive as they could be. Children's books with bright colors and illustrations are a big source of inspiration.

What I learned from working with children is to be a curious and inquisitive learner, not being fearful of giving it a go. In my practice I pretty much do whatever my heart tells me to make, I don't follow trends and make things I would like to be surrounded by, then I share them with you all.

Also, I am drawn to vintage everything, it is the bright colors combinations and the fun illustrations I am attracted to, that era was so playful. What is stuck in my mind are those vinyl colourful tablecloths with fun patterns, florals were my favorites. Who remembers them?

Next weekend I will be attending the Melbourne ceramic market, 2-3 December. I am looking forward to meeting new faces, new artists and sharing my passion with you all. So if you are a Melbourne resident or surroundings, come and have a wonder, maybe you find a special piece that will warm your heart. Yes the frenzy is coming and we are all being bombarded by sales adds.

Here is a thing we should have in mind before purchasing, and for small businesses not to jump in the rat race to compete with one another and squash another small business.

👎Impulsive Purchases: Focusing on discounts and low prices during Black Friday can lead to impulsive and unnecessary purchases. Shoppers may buy items they don't need simply because they appear to be good deals.

👎Buyer’s Remorse: The pressure to make quick purchasing decisions on Black Friday can result in buyer’s remorse once the day’s excitement fades. Shoppers may regret their purchases, realizing they made the wrong choices.

👎Materialism and Consumerism: Black Friday’s emphasis on materialism and consumerism can overshadow the true spirit of the holiday season, which is often about spending time with loved ones and showing gratitude. (This is my favorite)

👎 Impact on Retailers: While it seems beneficial for retailers, Black Friday’s intense competition and heavy discounts can lead to financial losses and overcrowded stores.

👎Ethical Concerns: Black Friday can harm ethical brands as retailers prioritize low prices over fair labor practices and sustainability. Consumers should consider the impact of their choices on workers and the environment.

Saying that, head down to your local small shop, go to a market and support micro business 🥰. Last year in Australia 9.1 billion dollars were spent during Black Friday!, imagine the difference it would make if a little of that giant piece of cake would go to makers! 🫶

I am getting ready this week for one more market I have on the line. This one is for the very locals and the lucky visitors we have in the area.
This Friday 24th I am attending the Xmas twilight market in Bright. There will be plenty of handmade goodies to choose from and it will start at 5pm.

Your support is crucial for micro business this year, 90% of the makers I have met during the last 3 years of doing markets, are run by women, some working part time and full time in these events. Some women have chosen this to have a flexible lifestyle that supports caring for their families, others suffer discrimination in workplaces so they decided to run a small business, others suffer from mental health issues and are unable to work in a 9-5 job. The list goes on.
Your support is crucial this year, because those big multimillionaire chains don't need more.

It has been hours and hours glazing here. This is a little snippet of an 8 hour session. The video is at a 2x speed so don't think it is that quick 😅. Then comes loading the kiln and every single inch is used so I can maximize the firings.

Lots of things are getting ready for the next market dates and stock lists.

The one I am super excited about and I am looking forward is 🥁🥁🥁 the @melbourne_ceramics_market on the 2-3 December at Abbotsford convent. This event is for those ceramic art lovers, there will be 50+ stalls of ceramics makers of different styles and places from around Australia. I cannot wait to meet new people and creatives.

The surroundings of this place are amazing! a fantastic place to spend a few hours and visit other artist shops, take a tour, have some lunch and go for a walk around the gardens.

Busy times making happy ceramics here in my little

Busy times making happy ceramics here in my little studio. As the weather warms up, my routine changes accordingly, I have to be extra careful with the drying process to avoid my ceramics cracking.
The good thing about these beautiful sunny days is that the solar power is working efficiently so I can fire my pots with less C02 emissions and this week is firing week!, I am getting new stock ready for this weekend's markets.
On Saturday I'll be attending the Heritage Festival in Beechworth at Victoria Park, this is my last appearance of 2023 in the lovely town of Beechworth.
On Sunday I am heading to @riverandwrenmarket 🫶 Yes it wasn't that long I was in Wagga 🤦.
I am taking some lovely ceramics, all hand painted and decorated with happy and joyful illustrations. I hope they will resonate with you.
I am taking some Xmas goodies as well, I have a limited amount available this year as I am falling short of time.

I am currently in Melbourne for a little escape, it feels so good to be able to do different things other than a mum's life routine.
I am exhausted from walking 😂, but enjoy every now and then being one more in the big city. Everything is buzzing here, and typical Melbourne weather (4 seasons in one day). I am back just in time for my local market in Beechworth tomorrow Saturday, I think it is going to be very busy this long weekend in the north East 🌷🫶. I might also show you in my stories what I am up to today 😉.

I looooooove tulips, in all colors, I love their simplicity, they represent rebirth and the beginning of a new cycle. I can't wait to glaze these pieces and I wonder if they are going to find a new home soon.

Last weekend lots of my ceramics found new homes at the CMRI market, it was just what I needed, lots of compliments and encouragement to keep creating, so thank you from the bottom of my heart for the purchases, the compliments, the follows on social media and the kind words. I am still recovering from the two day event, but my heart is full and my boxes a bit empty 😁 (a good problem to have).

IT IS WORTH IT.

Yesterday I received a very special compliment at the market I attended. A lovely customer stopped by and she told me she had bought a piece of my ceramics at one of my stockists, she felt a very special vibe when she held the piece, so she had to take it home with her. This person also told me she was so glad to have met me in person, now she can connect that piece to the maker, which has a lot of value these days in the mass production world we live in.

I can tell you my heart warmed up I blushed like a kid, it made me feel like what I do is worth the effort. This lady has no idea how her compliment has fueled me. My determination is to keep pushing through these rough times because let's face it, it has been difficult out there for a while.

Dear friends, keep giving positive encouragement and support makers in whatever capacity you can. It is so needed right now, artists and makers are really feeling the struggle. We deserve a big space in this world!. Have you thought how boring it would be without artist's work in the past and present??? Probably a very sad one, a black and white canvas.
